[Nam-Gu/Attraction] “Memorial Gate for Go Clan” and “House of Go Won-hui”

“Memorial Gate for Go Clan” and “House of Go Won-hui”

There is a saying that “to meet a great man you need to visit the site of birthplace of that great man.”
In Gwangji, there are “Memorial Gate for Go Clan” and “House of Go Won-hui” where you can feel the spirit of Gyungmyung Go, one of the three loyal subjects.

01 |Visit

Here we are at the entrance of Apchon Village.
Gwangju Apchon Village is a Jangheung Go family’s village
where Gyumgmyung Go’s site of birthplace is placed.
It is known as the 8th cultural property.
There are House of Go Won-hui and Gwangju’s the 12th monument,
Memorial Gate for Go Clan and Bean general center!

This is one of the spectacles of Apchon village on the way to the Memorial Gate for Go Clan
Now, Apchonje is registered as a bike hiking course
There is a bridge connecting the pavilion in the center of the reservoir and to the land,
it is being used as the place to relax of local residents..

In summer, lotus is beutifully blooming all around the reservoir,
it is also being used as a pathway to take a walk.

I could see the Memorial Gate for Go Clan after I walked for few minutes passing Apchonje.

The purpose of this main gate is to remember the loyal subject, devoted son or virtuous woman,
so it is placed at the entrance of the village of his house.
It is painted red and it is written “Chung” (loyal), “Hyo” (Devoted), “Yeol” (virtuous), title or name on the plaque.

Memorial Gate for Go Clan is to praise General Gyungmyung Go and his families’ seven “Chung”, “Hyo” and “Yeol” memorial gate.

The existing building was built in 1944,
there are Hongsalmun, a red gate with spiked top on every direction, Jungryu Hyunpan, a remembrance signboard front and back in two rows.

Next to Memorial Gate for Go Clan there is
Chuwongak of Go clan.
Written on the main gate “Seunghunmun” means
to keep the ancestors’ spirit and their blessings to the descendants.

This is the view of Chuwongak.
Memorial Gate for Go Clan and Chuwongak is always open.

After you look around Chuwongak, follow the sign of Gwangju Bean general center
to find “House of Go Won-hui”

Before I reached “House of Go Won-hui”, Gwangju Bean general center is firstly shown.
At Gwangju Bean general center, Doenjang (soybean paste) sale, Tofu making, natural dyeing, injeolmi rice cak making etc.
you can try lots of different activities and Traditional Hanok lodge is also available.
For more information check their website!

Not far from the Bean general center, you can find the “House of Go Won-hui”
The “House of Go Won-hui” was built by the descendants of the General Gyungmyung Go, who fought during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.

This is the head house built 100 years prior to the General Gyungmyung Go’s site of birthplace.
In 1987, it has been registered as the 8th cultural asset.
It is one of the famous old houses like House of Yi Jang-u and House of Choe Seung-hyo.

Now, this head house is owned by the 17th eldest grandson of Gyungmyung Go.
In the beginning, there were more buildings but there are only Sarangche (guest house), Anche (main building), Gotgan (storeroom)
and Sadang, where they keep the ancestral tablet.

This is a private house of Go Won-hui who is really living
so when visiting, please avoid speaking loud
and try to have least movements.

As I entered, Sarangche caught my eyes first.
The signboard of Sarangche was written “Se Dok Chung Jung”
“Men have to be loyal to the country
and always have to have upright mind”
the motto of Gyungmyung Go.

In spite of it is the Sarangche of the big house, it wasn’t that big or fancy.
But the clean interior looked dignifying.
He did not live as a fancy official, it was a dignifying sarangche like Gyungmyung Go’s life.

In the yard, there is a well-arranged vegerable garden
and I could see Bean general center over the wall.

If you go through the inner gate next to Sarangche, there is the Anche.
Compared to Sarangche, it was much bigger.
From the left, there are kitchen and room, hall floor and rooms
I could feel the beauty of a house with several wings.

Because of the trait of a traditional house which the pathways are connected,
it was not difficult to look around everywhere.

Last, there is Sadang inside the house.
They prepared ancestral tablet of the General Gyungmyung Go, Jonghu and Inhu, the two sons.
Sarangche and Anche were both open but unfortunately,
we could not enter Sadang.

Behind the house, there is a climbing pathway to Mt. Jebong.
After you look around the house, it is great to take a walk to the pine forest!
