Yangdong Market

Today, I will introduce Yangdong Market at Seogu Gwangju,

which is the largest traditional market in the Honam (southwestern region of Korea) area!

01 ｜Visit

 Yangdong Market originated from a market that was held at a sandy beach under Gwangju Bridge in 2010,

and transferred to the present location during the Japanese colonization period..

 Before 1969,  it was a city-operated market,

 Since then, it has been a  private market.

 In 1972, Bokgate Shopping Mall was established. ,

Today, it is a clean and organized market with modern facilities.

Yangdong Market has a clean and fresh environment even though it is a traditional market.

 The market is composed of four buildings named as Ga, Na, Da, and Ra (based on the Korean alphabet).

There are around 340 stores selling agricultural, fishery, and industrial products, along with a mix of other goods..

 The ceiling of the Yangdong Market is a dome,

which provides a pleasant environment.

Then, let's enter the market!

 Delicious food, including hotdogs and fish cake bars,

captured my attention at the entrance of the market.

 Not only  was there delicious food, but there were also dried fish such as anchovies,.

 There are many sweet taffies in this picture.

However, because the taffies looked different from what I used to see,

I wondered what they were when I first saw them.

Living up to the name of Yandong Market, which is famous for ritual supplies,

a bunch of food for rituals was piled up to be sold at the entrance of the market.

Yangdong Market is divided into streets depending on the type of goods!

 This picture shows 'Yangdong Dry Fish Market,'

where various dried fish are displayed in line to be sold!

(Although this isn't shown well in the picture..)

 This street is called as 'Yangdong Vegetable Street.

Do you see the street full of fresh vegetables?

Each store in the Yangdong Market has different opening hours.

* The vegetable stores are open from 3 am to 9 pm!*

 This time... I will introduce skate, which is a food having a clear division of likes and dislikes!

Skate Street at the Traditional Market!!

 When entering the street, the pungent smell of  skate

softly waved towards me.

 I could see the cute (?) skate full of charm with my own eyes.

This place would be heaven for skate-loving maniacs.~

 Next is fisheries products, which cannot be left out!!

This is 'Yangdong Fisheries Street!'

 From hairtails, mackerels, and halibuts to octopus and devilfish,

there is no seafood that cannot be seen here.

 Yangdong Market is especially famous for ritual supplies and marriage supplies,

and accordingly, a street full of various marriage supplies, starting from hanbok (traditional Korean outfit), unfolds like this picture.

Although various marriage supplies, including bedclothes, fill the street,

 the beautiful hanbok attracted my attention..

In addition to the modernized hanbok, the small hanbok for children were especially cute.  

 Looking around various streets is quite interesting,

however, it is also very interesting to observe merchants..

The above picture shows a merchant making hangwa (traditional Korean sweets).

 Looking at pig heads is also another fun thing to do.

 Yangdong Market has appeared in a number of TV programs, including 'Running Man.'

 Nonetheless, the market is also famous for the rice soup restaurant where former president Roh Moo-hyun visited in 2002, when he was a presidential candidate.

This picture shows the restaurant, 'Hana Gukbap (gukbap meaning, rice soup).' 

 Yandong Market, which provides a lot to see and eat,

is a place where merchants provided rice balls, beverages, and medicine to the citizen militia during the 5.18 Democratization Movement in 1980.  It is a place

 where the spirit of great unity that supported the citizen militia still remains.
